First batch of aluminium produced with green hydrogen by H2GLASS partner Hydro Havrand!
Norsk Hydro, a key partner of H2GLASS, has achieved a groundbreaking milestone in the aluminium industry. They successfully produced the world’s first batch of recycled aluminium using green hydrogen as an energy source, marking a significant step towards carbon-free aluminium production.
In the test conducted at Hydro’s extrusion plant in Navarra, Spain, green hydrogen replaced natural gas as the fuel for recycling aluminium. The achievement demonstrates Hydro’s commitment to decarbonisation and holds great potential for sustainable aluminium production from post-consumer scrap.
This successful industrial-scale test was made possible through the collaborative efforts of hydrogen experts from Hydro Havrand, Hydro’s green hydrogen company, and Fives, an industrial engineering group with expertise in hydrogen burner technology for the aluminium industry. The use of green hydrogen offers a viable solution to address emissions from fossil fuels in energy-intensive sectors.
The test provides valuable insights into the transition from natural gas to hydrogen as an energy source and its impact on metal quality. Understanding these differences is essential to advancing the use of hydrogen in aluminium production and other high-temperature processes.
Hydro and Fives are currently analysing the results, with a comprehensive report expected in fall 2023.
This achievement aligns with the H2GLASS project’s objectives to revolutionise the glass and aluminium industries through hydrogen technology and promote sustainable practices.
