Recently, the H2GLASS consortium gathered in beautiful Avignon (France) for our official 36‑month review meeting, which is an important checkpoint marking three years of innovation, collaboration, and steady progress toward decarbonising the European glass industry.
Hosted close to our partner Owens Corning, the meeting offered the perfect setting to reflect on achievements so far and prepare for the exciting months ahead. With full-scale demonstrations now underway, the transition from design to deployment is becoming a tangible reality.
First Stop for the H2GLASS Mobile Electrolyser
One of the highlights of our Avignon meeting was celebrating a major project milestone: the first operational stop of our mobile electrolyser, now producing green hydrogen directly on-site to supply industrial glass furnaces.
This system showcases a crucial step in our mission: demonstrating that hydrogen can be generated reliably, and efficiently wherever glass production needs it. Delivering green Hydrogen directly to the furnace removes transport constraints and brings us closer to cleaner, scalable industrial operations.
Collaboration Driving Innovation
The review meeting brought together partners from across Europe: researchers, technology developers, industrial stakeholders, and project coordinators. Over two days, we aligned on technical progress, shared results from early-stage demonstrations, and refined our roadmap for the final project phase.
Key topics included:
Performance of the first on-site hydrogen delivery
Progress on furnace retrofits and combustion testing
Safety, monitoring, and control strategies
Integration of hydrogen production into industrial environments (for glass & aluminium)
Planning for upcoming demonstrations across partner sites
The atmosphere was filled with both pride and momentum. Seeing the technology move from concept to physical deployment created a strong sense of collective achievement.
A Step Closer to Climate-Neutral Glass Production
As we move into the final stretch of H2GLASS, the project is entering its most visible and impactful phase. Demonstrating hydrogen combustion in real industrial settings is essential for validating the feasibility and scalability of future hydrogen-powered glass production.
Our mobile electrolyser’s successful operation in Avignon marks one of four upcoming demonstrations that will bring us closer to a climate-neutral glass sector, one that can thrive economically while drastically reducing emissions.
Thank You to All Partners
A sincere thank you to our hosts at Owens Corning and to every partner contributing expertise, energy, and commitment to making H2GLASS a success. The next months promise to be both challenging and exciting, and we are ready.
