How can hydrogen technologies gain broad societal acceptance and what does it take to ensure that communities are part of the transition from the very beginning? These questions were at the heart of our recent joint webinar on the social acceptance of hydrogen technologies, which brought together participants from academia, research and industry.
A strong message to set the scene
The webinar opened with a keynote presentation from the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, offering valuable insights into the role of social acceptance within Europe’s hydrogen strategy. The keynote highlighted why societal engagement, transparency, and trust are essential enablers for the successful deployment of hydrogen technologies alongside technical innovation and market readiness.
Project insights from across Europe
The keynote was followed by presentations from three EU-funded projects, each addressing social acceptance from a different angle:
MOST-H2 presented its research on social acceptance via a public survey they conducted over the past months. Reflecting on their findings and how they can support further hydrogen uptake.
H2GLASS showcased its approach to viewing social acceptance through an operational lense. Conducting interviews with workers from the demonstration sites and analysing their responses.
HYGHER shared its work on the social acceptance of hydrogen technologies
Together, the project presentations demonstrated how social acceptance through stakeholder engagement, and communication activities are becoming integral components of hydrogen innovation in Europe.
Interactive roundtable discussion
A key highlight of the webinar was the roundtable discussion, which brought all speakers together to exchange perspectives and reflect on shared challenges and lessons learned. The discussion underlined the importance of:
Early and continuous engagement with local communities
Clear, transparent communication about benefits and risks
Cross-project collaboration to align methodologies and messages
Bridging the gap between research, policy, and real-world implementation
The interactive format also allowed participants to engage directly with the panelists and contribute questions and reflections.
Access the materials
The presentation slides are now available for those who would like to revisit the content or explore the insights in more detail. The recording of the webinar will be added shortly to the media library, making it easy to catch up or share the discussion with colleagues.
We would like to thank all speakers and participants for contributing to a rich and constructive exchange. The webinar clearly showed that social acceptance is not a “nice-to-have”, but a critical success factor for Europe’s hydrogen transition.
