Innovative Solutions for Decarbonising the European Glass Industry
On December 2nd, 2025, H2GLASS joined forces with two other currently running EU-funded projects – EVERGLASS and GIFFT – for a joint webinar that brought together experts and stakeholders from across Europe. The event highlighted the importance of collaboration and showcased how different technologies and approaches can accelerate the decarbonisation of the glass industry.
Why This Webinar Mattered
The glass industry is an energy-intensive sector facing significant challenges in reducing its carbon footprint. Achieving climate neutrality requires a mix of innovative solutions, from hydrogen integration and electrification to advanced materials and process optimization. This webinar provided a platform to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and explore synergies between projects working toward the same goal: a sustainable future for glass manufacturing.
Highlights from the Presentations
EVERGLASS introduced a radically new approach to recycling hard-to-recycle glass types like borosilicate and specialty glasses. Their concept of “glass laser morphing” uses laser-based processing to upcycle glass waste into tailor-made products, extending circularity beyond conventional container glass recycling.
Jozef Kraxner highlights the goal of EVERGLASS to give glass waste a second life. “With laser-based processing, we can transform hard-to-recycle materials into high-value products, complementing existing recycling systems,”.
GIFFT presented its work on fuel-flexible technologies for glass melting, combining biogenic residues, green electricity, and plasma-assisted combustion. This hybrid approach could unlock new renewable energy sources and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, while maintaining process efficiency.
Nerijus Striūgas explains that Flexibility is key. “By integrating biomass, electricity, and hydrogen, we can adapt to market conditions and significantly reduce CO₂ emissions.“
H2GLASS showcased its efforts to enable hydrogen combustion in glass furnaces, supported by advanced digital tools such as digital twins for predictive maintenance and process optimization. The project is conducting large-scale trials with a 2.5 MW electrolyser and developing smart automation systems to ensure safety and flexibility.
“We are not only enabling hydrogen combustion—we are building the digital backbone for a twin transition, combining green energy with smart technologies,” emphasized Chiara Caccamo.
Key Takeaways
Diverse technologies are essential: No single solution can decarbonise the glass industry; a combination of approaches is needed.
Collaboration accelerates innovation: Joint efforts between projects and stakeholders create synergies that speed up progress.
Safety and scalability matter: Implementing new technologies requires careful consideration of safety, cost, and readiness levels.
Looking Ahead
The webinar demonstrated the value of knowledge sharing and cross-project collaboration. As these projects continue their work, they will play a crucial role in shaping a greener, more sustainable glass industry.
